Errores frecuentes

Evita estos errores frecuentes

Incorrecto I live in a house with three rooms.
Correcto I live in a three-bedroom house / a house with three bedrooms.

In English, homes are described by number of bedrooms: 'a two-bedroom flat', 'a three-bedroom house'. Saying 'three rooms' is ambiguous. Estate agents and native speakers always use 'bedrooms' as the unit of measurement.

Incorrecto The sofa is in the living-room.
Correcto The sofa is in the living room.

'Living room', 'dining room', 'sitting room' are written as two separate words — never hyphenated. Note that 'bedroom' and 'bathroom' are usually written as one word.

Incorrecto The radiator doesn't warm.
Correcto The radiator is not working / is not heating properly.

In English you say a radiator 'heats' or 'works' — not 'warms' as an intransitive verb. Standard phrases: 'the heating is not working', 'the radiator has stopped working'.

Incorrecto I want a furnished apartment with furniture inside.
Correcto I am looking for a furnished apartment.

'Furnished' already means the apartment comes with furniture — 'with furniture inside' is redundant. The opposite is 'unfurnished'. A 'part-furnished' flat has some appliances but no sofas or beds.

Incorrecto Upstairs neighbours are making noise.
Correcto The upstairs neighbours / the neighbours upstairs are making noise.

In English 'upstairs' and 'downstairs' work as adjectives before or after the noun: 'the upstairs neighbours' or 'the neighbours upstairs'. Always include the definite article when referring to specific neighbours.

They are building a new house' frente a 'I want to go home'. Un piso o apartamento puede ser tu home, pero no un house.

Ambos son correctos. Flat es inglés británico y apartment es inglés americano; los dos significan „piso/apartamento“. En el Reino Unido 'rent a flat', en EE. UU. 'rent an apartment'. En uso americano 'apartments' también puede referirse a un complejo residencial.

En inglés británico la planta a nivel de calle es el ground floor („planta baja“), y el first floor es el piso de arriba (nuestro „primer piso“) — igual que en español. Pero ojo: en inglés americano el first floor es la planta baja. Si quedas 'on the first floor' en Londres, subes un piso.

Furniture (muebles) es un sustantivo incontable y no tiene plural. No se dice „furnitures“ ni „a furniture“. Se usa 'some furniture', 'a piece of furniture' (un mueble) o 'two pieces of furniture'. Es un error típico, porque en español „muebles“ sí es plural, pero en inglés hay que usar a piece of.

No. Cuando home significa „a casa“, funciona como adverbio, así que se dice 'go home', 'come home', 'get home' — sin preposición ni artículo. „Go to home“ es incorrecto. Solo aparece preposición cuando home es sustantivo con complemento: 'go to my parents' home'. Por defecto: 'I'm going home.'

Las viviendas se describen por el número de dormitorios: a one-bedroom flat, a three-bedroom house. La unidad es el bedroom, no „rooms“ — 'a house with three rooms' es ambiguo. También 'a studio flat' y la superficie en 'square metres' (UK). Los agentes inmobiliarios siempre cuentan dormitorios.
