Errores frecuentes

Evita estos errores frecuentes

Incorrecto I make shower every morning.
Correcto I take a shower / I have a shower every morning.

In English you 'take' or 'have' a shower — never 'make'. The same pattern applies to baths: 'take a bath' / 'have a bath'. 'Make' is used for breakfast: 'make breakfast', but not for bathing actions.

Incorrecto My alarm rang at seven.
Correcto My alarm went off at seven.

Alarm clocks 'go off' in English — this is the standard phrasal verb. 'Ring' is not wrong but sounds unnatural for modern alarms. You can also say 'my alarm sounded' or 'my alarm woke me up at seven.'

Incorrecto I brush my teeths every morning.
Correcto I brush my teeth every morning.

'Teeth' is already the plural of 'tooth' — there is no form 'teeths'. The same pattern applies to other irregular plurals: foot/feet, child/children, person/people.

Incorrecto I woke up late and I was in a hurry so I did not have time to make my hair.
Correcto I did not have time to do my hair / comb my hair.

In English you 'do your hair' (style it) or 'comb/brush your hair' — never 'make your hair'. 'Make' is not used for personal grooming verbs in English. Compare: 'do your makeup' — same pattern.

Incorrecto I need 20 minutes for getting ready.
Correcto I need 20 minutes to get ready.

After 'need', English uses an infinitive (to + verb): 'I need to get ready', 'I need to leave', 'I need to eat'. The gerund form ('for getting') sounds unnatural here. Note: 'It takes me 20 minutes to get ready' is also correct.

  • quedarse en la cama = lie in (inglés británico) / sleep in (inglés americano)
  • quedarse dormido / no oír el despertador = sleep through the alarm
  • despertador = alarm clock — en inglés el despertador 'suena' con el verbo go off: 'My alarm went off at six thirty'
  • botón de posponer = snooze button — 'I hit snooze twice'
  • quedarse dormido más tiempo del previsto = oversleep: 'I overslept and missed the bus'

Atención: el despertador en inglés 'goes off', no 'rings'. 'Rings' se usa para teléfonos y timbres. La frase correcta es siempre: 'My alarm went off'.

Higiene personal por la mañana

Error frecuente para hispanohablantes: en inglés la ducha se 'toma' con take o have, nunca se 'hace'. 'I take a shower every morning' (más americano) / 'I have a shower every morning' (más británico). Nunca: 'I make a shower'.

  • ducharse = take / have a shower
  • bañarse = take / have a bath
  • lavarse la cara = wash your face
  • lavarse los dientes / cepillarse los dientes = brush your teeth (nunca 'clean your teeth' en el habla cotidiana)
  • afeitarse = shave: 'I shave every morning' / 'She shaves her legs'
  • peinarse con peine = comb your hair
  • peinarse con cepillo = brush your hair
  • alisarse el pelo = straighten your hair
  • maquillarse = put on makeup / do your makeup (nunca 'make your makeup' — el verbo correcto es do o put on)
  • ponerse crema hidratante = moisturise (británico) / moisturize (americano)

  • preparar el desayuno = make breakfast
  • saltarse el desayuno = skip breakfast: 'I often skip breakfast when I'm in a rush'
  • comer algo rápido = grab something to eat
  • comer por el camino = eat on the go

  • vestirse = get dressed
  • ponerse una prenda = put on: 'Put on your coat before leaving'
  • llevar puesto (estado) = wear: 'I'm wearing a blue shirt' — describe el estado, no la acción
  • planchar la ropa = iron your clothes / iron a shirt
  • hacer la cama = make the bed
  • preparar la bolsa / mochila = pack your bag
  • cerrar la puerta con llave = lock the door
  • salir de casa = leave the house / head out (informal)

Llegar tarde o a tiempo

  • llegar a tiempo = be on time
  • llegar pronto = be early
  • llegar tarde = be late
  • estar llegando tarde (en proceso) = be running late: 'Sorry, I'm running a bit late'
  • tener prisa = be in a hurry / rush: 'I was in such a rush this morning'
  • desplazarse al trabajo = commute: 'I commute by metro every day' / 'My commute takes 40 minutes'

Preguntas frecuentes

Wake up significa „despertarse“ (abrir los ojos, dejar de dormir). Get up significa „levantarse“ (salir de la cama). Son dos acciones distintas: 'I wake up at 7, but I don't get up until 7:30.' Recuerda el orden natural: primero wake up, luego get up.

Ambas son correctas. Have a shower es inglés británico y take a shower es inglés americano. No digas „make a shower“.

„At morning“ no existe. Compara: 'at night', pero 'in the morning', 'in the afternoon', 'in the evening'. Para un día concreto se usa on: 'on Monday morning'.

La frase natural es make the bed ('I make my bed every morning'). „Do the bed“ es incorrecto. Aquí make coincide con el español „hacer la cama“. Usa artículo o posesivo: 'make the bed', 'make my bed'.

Have breakfast es lo más natural ('I have breakfast at 8'). 'Eat breakfast' también es correcto, pero más literal. Importante: las comidas no llevan artículo — di 'have breakfast', no „have a breakfast“. El artículo solo aparece con adjetivo: 'have a big breakfast' („desayunar“ se traduce como 'to have breakfast').
