Madre/Padre
This is her first dental visit. She's three, and she's already nervous.
Es su primera visita al dentista. Tiene tres años y ya está nerviosa.
Dentista
That's fine — the first visit is mostly about getting comfortable. I use tell-show-do: I explain, I show her the instrument, then I use it.
Madre/Padre
She won't open her mouth for me at home.
En casa no me abre la boca.
Dentista
Sit her on your lap facing you, then tip her head back into mine. At this age it works better than the chair.
Madre/Padre
She still has a bottle at night.
Todavía toma biberón por la noche.
Dentista
That's worth stopping. A night-time bottle with milk or juice is the main cause of early childhood caries — the liquid pools around the upper front teeth while she sleeps.
Conviene retirarlo.
Madre/Padre
She's had a dummy since she was a baby, too.
Y usa chupete desde bebé.
Dentista
Under three that's not a concern. If pacifier use or thumb sucking continues past four, it starts to affect the bite.
Madre/Padre
How much toothpaste should I use?
¿Cuánta pasta debo poner?
Dentista
A smear under three, a pea-sized amount from three onwards. Fluoride toothpaste — and let her spit, but don't rinse.
Madre/Padre
She wants to brush by herself.
Quiere cepillarse ella sola.
Dentista
Let her start, then you finish. Supervised brushing until about seven — she doesn't have the dexterity yet.
Madre/Padre
I noticed a brown mark on a back tooth.
Dentista
I can see it — that's early decay. At this age I'd consider silver diamine fluoride: it arrests the decay without drilling.
Madre/Padre
Does it stain?
¿Mancha el diente?
Dentista
It turns the decayed part black. On a back baby tooth that's usually an acceptable trade for avoiding treatment under sedation.
Madre/Padre
And when the front teeth start falling out?
Dentista
A wobbly tooth will usually come out on its own — don't pull it early. And the tooth fairy is welcome to it.
Madre/Padre
When should we come back?
¿Cuándo debemos volver?
Dentista
Every six months. We'll apply fluoride varnish each time, and place fissure sealants on the molars once they come through.

Errores frecuentes

Evita estos errores frecuentes

Incorrecto The child was very capricious during the appointment.
Correcto The child was very uncooperative during the appointment.

Falso amigo.

Incorrecto He still uses a nipple at night and falls asleep with a bottle.
Correcto He still uses a dummy at night and falls asleep with a bottle.

Incorrecto He does not want to open his mouth for the examination.
Correcto He will not open his mouth for the examination.

Will not, y sobre todo won't, expresa rechazo presente, no futuro: he won't open his mouth. Does not want to describe un deseo y suena más débil. En pasado igual: he wouldn't open his mouth significa que se negó. Frases afines: he refuses to sit still, she keeps closing her mouth.

Incorrecto She is very scared from the dentist since her last visit.
Correcto She has been very scared of the dentist since her last visit.

Los adjetivos de miedo llevan of: scared of, afraid of, frightened of. El español «miedo a» induce a from, que no funciona. Sustantivos: dental anxiety, dental phobia, needle phobia; alternativa: be nervous about. Además, con since el inglés exige present perfect.

Incorrecto The upper incisors show caries of the bottle.
Correcto The upper incisors show early childhood caries.

  • positive reinforcement y reward sticker
  • voice control — tono calmado y firme, usado a propósito

  • bottle caries
  • nursing bottle decay
  • baby bottle tooth decay

  • atraumatic restorative treatment e interim therapeutic restoration
  • pulp therapy, indirect pulp treatment y, si procede, extraction of primary tooth
  • preventive resin restoration, space maintainer

Hábitos: dummy sucking, thumb sucking, prolonged pacifier use.

Clínicamente early childhood caries; coloquialmente bottle caries, nursing bottle decay, baby bottle tooth decay.

Scared of, igual que afraid of y frightened of. El español «miedo a» induce a from, que no funciona. Sustantivos: dental anxiety, dental phobia, needle phobia; más suave: nervous about.
