A lista reúne 66 termos: classificação do trauma, primeiros socorros e transporte do dente, quadros ameaçadores, quebras de restaurações e proteção no esporte.

Para quem é

  • Viajantes e pais — explicar a situação por telefone no exterior
  • Dentistas — atender urgências e triar chamadas
  • Estudantes — a classificação do trauma dentário como é cobrada

Erros comuns

Evite estes erros frequentes

Errado The child was admitted after a dental traumatism.
Certo The child was admitted after a dental injury.

Atenção à contabilidade: trauma é incontável no sentido geral, injury é contável — a lip injury, several injuries. O adjetivo é traumatic e a disciplina a dental traumatology.

Errado I am calling because I have an urgency with my front tooth.
Certo I am calling because I have an emergency with my front tooth.

Use o adjetivo: I need an urgent appointment. Vocabulário: emergency appointment, urgent care, out-of-hours service, emergency department.

Errado His front tooth fell out when he hit the table.
Certo His front tooth was knocked out when he hit the table.

O verbo codifica a causa. Por impacto fica knocked out, clinicamente avulsed, e o quadro é a avulsion. Verbos vizinhos: chip, crack, fracture, displace, intrude. O prognóstico depende do extra-oral dry time.

Errado Wash the tooth carefully and put it back into the hole.
Certo Rinse the tooth briefly and replant it in the socket.

Estão errados o termo e a instrução. O verbo é replant ou reimplant, o substantivo replantation, e o espaço é o socket. Clinicamente, segura-se o dente apenas by the crown: a raiz mantém células do periodontal ligament que a fricção destrói.

Errado The patient came in with a flux on the right side of the face.
Certo The patient came in with facial swelling from a dental abscess.

  • lateral luxation, extrusive luxation, intrusive luxation

Fraturas — por profundidade:

  • enamel fracture, enamel-dentin fracture
  • uncomplicated e complicated crown fracture — a segunda significa polpa exposta
  • crown-root fracture, root fracture, alveolar fracture, mandibular fracture

Tecidos moles: soft tissue laceration, lip laceration, tongue laceration, degloving injury. E à parte a avulsion, perda completa do alvéolo, mais o displaced tooth.

Dente avulsionado: os primeiros trinta minutos

O parágrafo mais valioso do tema:

  • segurar apenas pela coroa — handling by the crown, nunca pela raiz
  • não esfregar nem limpar
  • replantation time — quanto antes melhor, referência 30 minutos

  • facial cellulitis e Ludwig's angina
  • airway compromise, difficulty breathing
  • systemic involvement, sepsis
  • uncontrolled haemorrhage

Uma frase garante atenção imediata em qualquer lugar: I have facial swelling and difficulty breathing. Vale decorar.

O resto são quebras: broken filling, loose crown, fractured denture, broken bracket, loose band. Prevenção: mouthguard, sports mouthguard, custom-made mouthguard, boil-and-bite mouthguard, night guard.

  • Luxação cobre cinco termos ingleses: concussion, subluxation, lateral, extrusive, intrusive luxation
  • Dente avulsionado é avulsed tooth no prontuário e knocked-out tooth na fala
  • Plantão ou atendimento fora do horário é out-of-hours service
  • Reimplante é replantation; as diretrizes preferem esse termo a reimplantation
  • Inchaço facial é facial swelling — a frase de urgência é I have facial swelling

Perguntas frequentes

O dente está knocked out, clinicamente avulsed. Segura-se apenas by the crown, nunca a raiz, onde estão as células do periodontal ligament. O fator decisivo é o extra-oral dry time.

Não: trauma ou injury. Traumatism não se usa em inglês clínico. Atenção à contabilidade: dental trauma incontável, injury contável. Adjetivo traumatic, disciplina dental traumatology.

Use o adjetivo: I need an urgent appointment. Serviços: emergency appointment, urgent care, out-of-hours service, emergency department.

A avulsion; as luxation injuries — subluxation, lateral, intrusive e extrusive luxation — e a concussion injury. Fraturas: enamel fracture, enamel-dentin fracture, uncomplicated e complicated crown fracture, crown-root fracture, root fracture, alveolar fracture.

Primeiro o que aconteceu, quando e o sintoma principal: my son knocked out a front tooth ten minutes ago; I have severe swelling on the left side of my face. Perguntas previsíveis: when did it happen, can you open your mouth, is the swelling spreading, any difficulty breathing or swallowing?
