That's the whole point of the adjectives. 'Sharp' and 'throbbing' aren't synonyms in a dental history — they're two different diagnoses.

Erros comuns

Evite estes erros frequentes

Errado She has a composite white small filling in the upper left premolar.
Certo She has a small white composite filling in the upper left premolar.

Daí a small white composite filling. O material fica junto ao substantivo: a large porcelain crown, a thin ceramic veneer. As palavras de posição — upper, lower, left, right — abrem a série: the upper left first molar.

Errado The patient is very worrying about the extraction and finds it frightened.
Certo The patient is very worried about the extraction and finds it frightening.

Errado I am very painful on the lower right side.
Certo I am in a lot of pain on the lower right side.

Painful descreve o que dói, não quem sente: the tooth is painful. Para a pessoa usa-se in pain — I am in pain — ou have pain, ou simplesmente it hurts. Dizer I am painful implicaria causar dor a outros. Compare com sore: my gums are sore está certo. O adjetivo clínico para sensibilidade localizada é tender.

Errado We placed a light cured tooth coloured filling in a two year old child.
Certo We placed a light-cured, tooth-coloured filling in a two-year-old child.

Os modificadores compostos antepostos levam hífen: light-cured composite, tooth-coloured filling, screw-retained crown, two-year-old child. Depois do substantivo o hífen desaparece: the child is two years old, onde o s regressa.

Errado The radiograph shows profound caries approaching the pulp.
Certo The radiograph shows deep caries approaching the pulp.

Deep exprime profundidade física: deep caries, deep bite, deep pocket, deep cleaning.

  • upper right permanent first molar
  • lower left primary second molar

First upper right molar se entende, mas não é assim que se escreve num prontuário. A mesma lógica rege a ordem geral: a small white composite filling, tamanho antes da cor e cor antes do material.

Para orientação: upper e lower, anterior e posterior, left e right.

  • vital e non-vital — polpa viva e necrosada
  • fixed e removable
  • temporary e permanent
  • acute e chronic
  • mild, moderate, severe — três graus, não dois
  • erupted e unerupted
  • invasive e minimally invasive
  • surgical e non-surgical
  • sterile, disposable, reusable
  • healthy e unhealthy, painful e painless, comfortable e uncomfortable
  • firm, mobile, loose

Outros atributos: direct e indirect, elective, urgent, routine, preventive, restorative, cosmetic, resorbable, custom-made, keratinized.

Perguntas frequentes

Opinião, tamanho, idade, forma, cor, origem, material, finalidade, e depois o substantivo: a small white composite filling, a large porcelain crown. O material fica junto ao substantivo. As palavras de posição — upper, lower, left, right — abrem a série: the upper left first molar.

A forma em -ed descreve o sentimento da pessoa; a forma em -ing, a sua causa: the patient is worried, the procedure is worrying. Igualmente frightened/frightening, embarrassed/embarrassing, confused/confusing.

Não: I am in pain ou it hurts. Painful descreve a fonte da dor — the tooth is painful. Para sensibilidade localizada à pressão, o adjetivo clínico é tender: tender to touch, tender to percussion.

Antes do substantivo, sempre: light-cured composite, tooth-coloured filling, screw-retained crown, two-year-old child. Depois do substantivo desaparece: the child is two years old.

A partir do radical latino: gingiva dá gingival, apex apical, occlusion occlusal, pulp pulpal, cervix cervical, mucosa mucosal. Antes de outro substantivo é obrigatória a forma adjetiva: gingival margin, occlusal surface.

Destruição: decayed, carious, cracked, chipped, fractured, worn, eroded. Estabilidade: loose, mobile, firm, stable. Vitalidade: vital, non-vital, necrotic, coloquialmente dead. Posição: crooked, crowded, rotated, impacted, unerupted. Aspeto: stained, discoloured.
