Dentiste
Before I chart anything, I'd like two bitewing radiographs.
Patient
I had X-rays two years ago. Do I need more?
J'ai fait des radios il y a deux ans. Faut-il en refaire ?
Dentiste
Bitewings are usually repeated every two years for low-risk patients. They show decay between the teeth and the bone level — things I can't see by looking.
Patient
I'm worried about the radiation.
Je m'inquiète pour les rayons.
Dentiste
A digital bitewing is roughly the dose you get from one day of natural background radiation. Digital radiography needs far less exposure than film did.
Patient
Do I still need the lead apron?
Dentiste
With modern collimation the apron is optional, but I'll use a thyroid collar for you — it costs nothing and it's sensible.
Patient
What about that big machine in the corner?
Et cette grande machine dans le coin ?
Dentiste
That's for a panoramic radiograph — one image of both jaws. I'd only take one to assess wisdom teeth or the joints.
Patient
This upper tooth has been aching.
Cette dent du haut me fait mal.
Dentiste
Then I'll add a periapical radiograph of that one and run some tests. This is cold — tell me when you feel it, and when it stops.
Patient
I feel it... and it's still going after you took it away.
Dentiste
That's a lingering response. It suggests the pulp is inflamed rather than simply sensitive.
C'est une réponse persistante. Cela évoque une pulpe enflammée plutôt qu'une simple sensibilité.
Patient
Does the X-ray show that?
Est-ce que ça se voit sur la radio ?
Dentiste
Not directly. Pulp inflammation is a clinical diagnosis. What the film shows is whether there's a periapical radiolucency — a dark area at the root tip where bone has been lost.
Patient
And is there?
Et y en a-t-il une ?
Dentiste
A small one. Combined with the cold test, that gives me a diagnosis rather than a guess.
Patient
So both the tests and the X-ray are needed?
Dentiste
Always. A radiograph without a clinical examination is just a picture.
Toujours.

Incorrect Please put the radiography on the screen.
Correct Please put the radiograph on the screen.

Trois mots, trois sens.

Incorrect We will make an X-ray of the lower left quadrant.
Correct We will take an X-ray of the lower left quadrant.

Le verbe est take : take an X-ray, take a radiograph. Make an X-ray calque « faire une radio ». Le même verbe couvre take an impression, take a photograph, take a history et take a scan.

Incorrect The metal post appears radiolucent, so it is bright white on the image.
Correct The metal post appears radiopaque, so it is bright white on the image.

Incorrect Based on these findings I would put the diagnosis of irreversible pulpitis.
Correct Based on these findings I would make a diagnosis of irreversible pulpitis.

Vocabulaire voisin : differential diagnosis, provisional diagnosis, rule out, confirm.

Incorrect The anamnesis revealed that the patient takes warfarin.
Correct The medical history revealed that the patient takes warfarin.

  • X-ray — le rayonnement et, familièrement, l'image : I need an X-ray

On dit take an X-ray ; le protocole écrit expose a radiograph.

Paramètres : exposure, exposure time, kilovoltage, radiation dose.

  • palpation, percussion test, mobility test, probing

Documentation : intraoral camera, clinical photograph, study model, diagnostic cast, dental charting, periodontal charting.

Take an X-ray, jamais make. Le même verbe couvre take an impression, take a photograph, take a history et take a scan.

Voir differential diagnosis, rule out, confirm.

History : medical history, dental history, social history, family history.
