Patient
I lost a lower molar last year. What can be done about the gap?
J'ai perdu une molaire inférieure l'an dernier. Que peut-on faire pour combler le trou ?
Dentiste
Three options: a dental implant, a dental bridge, or a partial denture.
Patient
Which lasts longest?
Qu'est-ce qui dure le plus longtemps ?
Dentiste
An implant, usually. It replaces the root itself and doesn't involve the neighbouring teeth.
Patient
What's involved with a bridge?
Qu'implique un bridge ?
Dentiste
I would prepare the two adjacent teeth as abutment teeth and cement a bridge with a pontic in the gap.
Patient
So healthy teeth get drilled?
Donc on taille des dents saines ?
Dentiste
Yes — that is the main drawback. With an implant they stay untouched.
Oui, c'est le principal inconvénient. Avec un implant, elles restent intactes.
Patient
How does the implant work?
Comment fonctionne l'implant ?
Dentiste
A titanium fixture is placed in the bone. Over about three months it fuses with the bone — that is osseointegration.
Patient
Is three months of waiting normal?
Trois mois d'attente, est-ce normal ?
Dentiste
That is the healing period. You would wear a temporary while we wait.
C'est la période de cicatrisation. En attendant, vous porterez un provisoire.
Patient
Do I have enough bone?
Ai-je assez d'os ?
Dentiste
The scan shows the ridge has narrowed. You would need a small bone graft at the time of placement.
Patient
And after it heals?
Et après la cicatrisation ?
Dentiste
I attach an abutment, take a digital scan, and fit an implant crown on top.
Patient
How do I look after it?
Comment l'entretenir ?
Dentiste
Like a natural tooth, plus interdental cleaning. Neglect leads to peri-implantitis, which can loosen the implant.

Incorrect The laboratory delivered a fixed prothesis on Friday.
Correct The laboratory delivered a fixed prosthesis on Friday.

Incorrect My body rejected the implant after two months.
Correct The implant failed to osseointegrate and was lost after two months.

Au patient on dira the implant did not integrate with the bone.

Incorrect He needs a bridge from three teeth to close the gap.
Correct He needs a three-unit bridge to close the gap.

Incorrect The dentist made a print of my teeth and sent it to the lab.
Correct The dentist took an impression of my teeth and sent it to the lab.

La collocation est take an impression. Vocabulaire associé : impression tray, alginate, polyvinyl siloxane, bite registration.

Incorrect My implant chipped, so they will replace the implant.
Correct My implant crown chipped, so they will replace the crown.

Préparation : crown preparation, tooth preparation, finish line, shoulder margin, chamfer margin. Finalisation : try-in, bite registration, shade selection, cementation.

Laboratoire : framework, metal framework, casting, digital scan, intraoral scanner, CAD/CAM restoration, milling.

Take an impression, jamais make a print.
